In Nova Scotia basic health coverage (called Medical Service Insurance or MSI) is already paid through your taxes. You should apply for your health card as soon as you arrive. If you are relocating from another Province you will have to wait but if you are immigrating to Nova Scotia from another country you will usually be covered from the first day you arrive.
You must carry this card with you at all times. This health card allows you to receive some free medical and hospital services in Nova Scotia. The Provincial health card only covers certain medical services, additional health insurance is available from private companies for such things as prescription drugs, dental care, eye care, and medical equipment. These services also often provided as part of an employee benefit plan.
Halifax Regional Municipality has one of the largest concentrations of health care facilities and specialists in Canada for more info on MSI www.gov.ns.ca/health/msi or call 902 496 7008
